What this Trial Is About

The aging population is growing rapidly due to advances in medical technology and living conditions, leading to a higher prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) among older adults. As CKD patients age, their ability to manage daily activities independently often declines, compounded by other health issues and reduced quality of life. Researchers are exploring how physical activity, especially eccentric cycling exercises, may improve cardiovascular health, endurance, muscle strength, and overall well-being in this population. This study compares the effects of eccentric cycling exercise training to concentric cycling exercise and usual care in older adults with CKD. Participants are randomly assigned to one of three groups: a control group receiving standard health education, a concentric cycling group, or an eccentric cycling group. The exercise groups complete 24 sessions over eight weeks, training three times weekly on stationary bicycles. Sessions start at 20 minutes and increase gradually to 30 minutes, with intensity adjusted to maintain a perceived exertion level of 13. Participants undergo assessments at baseline, midterm (4 weeks), post-test (8 weeks), and follow-up (12 weeks). Tests include cardiopulmonary exercise testing, pulmonary function, maximum respiratory pressure, six-minute walk test, and lower limb strength evaluation. Researchers also monitor body composition, functional capacity, flexibility, muscle strength, quality of life, and kidney function to determine the effects of the exercise programs over time.
