Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Biological female sex
  • Age between 35 and 60 years (including pre- and postmenopausal)
  • Self-reported white or black race
  • Approximately 50% white and 50% black participants will be enrolled
  • Body mass index of 40 kg/m2 or higher
  • Diagnosis of hyperlipidemia or receiving treatment for hyperlipidemia at enrollment
  • Ability to provide written informed consent
  • Willingness to allow collection and storage of biospecimens and data for future use
  • Have not started the pre-operative liquid diet before bariatric surgery
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Diagnosis of type one or type two diabetes
  • Use of anti-inflammatory medications such as glucocorticoids or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs within the past 15 days
  • Use of medications approved for obesity management (e.g., phentermine-topiramate, orlistat, naltrexone-bupropion, liraglutide, semaglutide)
  • History of any type of cancer
  • History of chronic inflammatory conditions like tuberculosis, autoimmune disease, or HIV
  • Acute or confirmed/suspected COVID-19 infection within the past 60 days
  • Currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy within the next 52 weeks
  • Currently participating in another study with competing outcomes
  • Any other condition judged by the investigator to affect safety or study compliance
