Electroacupuncture to Assist Ventilator Weaning in Severe Stroke
Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Age 18 to 75 years
- Stroke (ischemic or hemorrhagic) within 7 days confirmed by CT or MRI
- Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) on admission 12 or lower, or NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) on admission 11 or higher, or APACHE I score 15 or higher
- Currently receiving mechanical ventilation
- Able to provide written informed consent or have a surrogate provide consent according to local ethics guidelines
You will not qualify if you...
- Expected ventilation duration less than 24 hours
- Already ventilated for more than 72 hours
- Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) less than 5
- Unstable vital signs requiring vasoactive agents
- Medical conditions interfering with outcome assessment or follow-up
- Spinal cord injury above T8, lower motor neuron or neuromuscular junction impairment
- Chest wall deformities or injuries within 6 months
- Chest or abdominal surgery within 4 weeks
- Pregnancy
- Acute skin injury at the acupuncture sites
- Currently participating in other investigational trials
