Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Diagnosis of Essential Tremor by a movement disorder neurologist, with tremor not caused by another disease or injury
- Tremor mainly in distal limbs with little proximal involvement
- Tremor not improved by multiple medications or medications cause intolerable side effects
- Tremor severely affecting quality of life
You will not qualify if you...
- Significant neurological disorders
- Significant dementia or cognitive problems as assessed by neuropsychiatry
- Severe psychiatric illness with suicidal thoughts
- Previous surgery destroying the brain target area
- Medical reasons preventing DBS surgery
- Major medical problems affecting brain function, such as liver or kidney failure, heart problems, infections, cancer, hypothyroidism, autoimmune diseases, or history of brain disorders like seizures or stroke
- Family history of hereditary neurological disorders other than Essential Tremor
- Presence of floating metallic objects in the body
- Pregnancy
- Alcohol or substance abuse in the past 6 months
