What this Trial Is About
This research focuses on Black individuals diagnosed with various gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, including anal, colon, rectal, esophageal, stomach, small bowel, appendix, pancreas, gall bladder, liver, and neuroendocrine tumors of GI origin. The study aims to address disparities in cancer care and outcomes among Black participants by improving biomarker testing, evidence-based care, and clinical trial enrollment. It also seeks to enhance health literacy related to participants' diagnoses and treatments. The study has three main parts: first, ensuring appropriate biomarker testing and providing evidence-based care through a molecular tumor board that advises treating physicians; participants will receive standard-of-care treatments and no experimental therapies. Second, the study team assists participants interested in enrolling in clinical trials suitable for their condition. Third, health literacy is supported by providing educational materials and questionnaires to assess participants' understanding before and after receiving information. Participants will be engaged through questionnaires assessing health literacy, educational support, and assistance with clinical trial enrollment. Researchers will monitor biomarker testing rates, clinical trial participation, and changes in health literacy over 24 months. The study uses an integrated information platform to track biomarker results and guide care. Participation involves standard care treatments, with no experimental interventions, and aims to improve care quality and inclusivity for Black patients with GI cancer.
