What this Trial Is About
Researchers are studying patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy who have SEEG electrodes implanted to assess how different burst stimulation patterns affect brain activity. The study compares single-pulse, paired-pulse, stepwise frequency, and burst electrical stimulations to understand their focal and network modulation effects during resting and post-seizure states. The study involves several types of direct electrical stimulation using SEEG: single-pulse stimulations at 1Hz to evoke cortico-cortical responses; paired-pulse stimulations with intervals between 5 to 50 milliseconds; stepwise frequency stimulations cycling from 5 Hz to 145 Hz; and burst stimulations delivering short bursts once per second with intraburst frequencies of 50, 100, 150, 175, and 200 Hz. Participants will be continuously monitored during their long-term SEEG recordings in the epilepsy-monitoring unit. Researchers will measure modulation factor, EEG power across spectral frequency bands, and phase locking value over sessions lasting up to 3 hours per subject. The study includes assessments during resting and post-seizure periods and tracks brain responses to the various stimulation patterns.
