Study of a County-Level Eye Health Service to Prevent and Manage Visual Problems in Rural Chinese Children and Teens

Researchers are evaluating an integrated child eye health service model in rural China to improve eye care for children and adolescents aged 3 to 18 years. This study aims to assess how well this county-based model works in real-world settings by looking at eye health screening coverage, correction of refractive errors, referrals after screening, and access disparities across different local levels such as county, township, village, and schools. The study focuses on common issues like myopia and amblyopia, which can affect childrens development if untreated. The study involves annual standardized eye health screenings conducted in schools under routine field conditions. These screenings include visual acuity tests, intraocular pressure measurements, and assessments for conditions like strabismus and amblyopia using various tools including a smartphone-based Digital Ruler of Strabismus. The service model also includes establishing referral systems and strengthening eye care capacity at county hospitals. The study is planned to run with data collected yearly over three years. Participants will undergo yearly eye examinations and screenings, with data collected on coverage rates, refractive error correction, screening detection rates, and referral outcomes. Researchers will monitor these clinical outcomes and track trends in access to eye care services. The study will also observe long-term effects on the management of pediatric eye diseases and visual function improvement. Participation includes informed consent and assent for older children, with a focus on sustaining eye health services and promoting equitable access in rural areas.
