Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Subjects speaking any language
- Able to provide informed consent or have parental/guardian consent if under 18
- Able to perform pulmonary function test maneuvers according to laboratory protocol
- Enrolled through Mayo Clinic Rochester Transgender and Intersex Specialty Care Clinic
- Decided to undergo hormonal gender-affirming therapies such as pubertal blockers or masculinizing/feminizing hormone therapies
You will not qualify if you...
- Unable to provide consent or unwilling to discuss the study with parents/guardians
- Contraindications for pulmonary function testing including recent surgeries (<3 months) affecting lungs: abdominal, eye, thoracic, ear, brain, vascular surgery
- Known respiratory disorders such as recent pulmonary embolism (<6 months), pleural effusion, pneumothorax, hemoptysis
- Recent myocardial infarction (<1 month), new cardiac arrhythmia (<3 months), recent cardiac pacemaker implantation (<3 months)
- Symptoms of heart failure, significant shortness of breath, tachycardia, or angina
- Chronic pulmonary diseases affecting lung function such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or interstitial lung diseases
