Parenting Program Study for Adults With Children Aged 4 to 12 Years Who Have a Parent With Alcohol Use Disorder

Alcohol use disorders are a major public health concern, especially in Europe, where about 7.5% of the population is affected. Children of parents with alcohol use disorders face a higher risk of early substance use and negative life events. This study evaluates a parenting support program designed to help families where at least one parent has an alcohol use disorder, aiming to reduce risks and improve outcomes for children aged 4 to 12 years. The study assesses the EQUIPE program, a French adaptation of the Canadian Community Parent Education COPE program. This intervention involves weekly 2-hour group sessions over 10 weeks, where parents watch video vignettes, discuss parenting challenges, and practice educational strategies to improve communication and problem-solving within the family. The program targets strengthening protective factors to prevent risky behavior in children. Participants will attend the 10-week program and be followed for up to 12 months after completion. Researchers will measure the programs effectiveness at 6 months post-intervention, along with parental stress, self-esteem, childrens behavior, alcohol use and severity, anxiety and depression symptoms, quality of life, and participant acceptability. These assessments occur at 3, 6, and 12 months after the program to monitor changes and long-term impact.
