Evaluation of Sarcopenia in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease Using Ultrasound and CT Muscle Measurements

This research aims to evaluate how well ultrasonographic muscle measurements compare to the standard computed tomography CT assessments in patients with inflammatory bowel disease IBD, including Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis. Sarcopenia, or muscle loss, is common in IBD due to inflammation and other factors, and accurate muscle assessment is important for patient care. CT scans are the current gold standard but have limitations like radiation exposure and accessibility. The study will observe adult patients aged 18 and older with confirmed IBD. Muscle strength will be measured using handgrip dynamometry, and muscle mass will be evaluated using ultrasound imaging of several muscle groups such as the rectus femoris and biceps brachii. For patients who have had a recent abdominal CT scan within six months, muscle area measurements at the L3 vertebral level from those scans will be recorded to compare with ultrasound results. Participants will undergo muscle strength and ultrasound assessments during the study visit. No additional invasive tests will be performed for research purposes. Researchers will compare the ultrasound and CT measurements to see how well they agree. They will also explore links between muscle measurements, clinical features, and lab data. The main measure is the agreement between ultrasound and CT muscle assessments at baseline, with follow-up lasting until study completion in December 2026.
