What this Trial Is About

Pediatric traumatic injury is a leading cause of death and health problems among adolescents aged 12 to 17 in the US. These injuries often lead to mental health issues like posttraumatic stress and depression, affecting up to 42% of patients, as well as challenges in physical recovery and social life. This research evaluates the Trauma Resilience and Recovery Program (TRRP), a technology-enhanced, stepped care model designed to support mental and emotional recovery and improve quality of life after injury. The study also explores how TRRP could be implemented more widely in pediatric trauma centers. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: the TRRP group receives a three-step intervention including in-hospital education with brief risk reduction, emotional recovery tracking through automated text messages, a 30-day telephone screening for psychological treatment needs, and referrals to telehealth or in-person mental health services if needed. The comparison group receives brief educational materials about mental health recovery and local referrals for those seeking treatment. This approach combines technology and multidisciplinary care to address patients' mental health needs after traumatic injury. Throughout the study, participants will be assessed using various measures such as the Child PTSD Symptom Scale, depression scales, distress inventories, alcohol use screening, social support questionnaires, and quality of life evaluations at baseline and several follow-up points up to 12 months. The study aims to track emotional and quality of life improvements as well as the feasibility of implementing TRRP in other trauma centers. The total study period includes baseline assessments and follow-ups at 3, 6, and 12 months post-injury to monitor recovery and mental health outcomes.
