Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Patients of any gender who are older than 21 years
- Permission from the patient's clinical attending physician
- Previous diagnosis of heart failure with New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class II or III symptoms lasting at least 1 month
- Left ventricular ejection fraction greater than 50% measured by echocardiography, MRI, CT, x-ray, or nuclear ventriculography within the past 12 months
- Stable medical therapy for at least 30 days with no major changes in RAAS antagonists, beta-blockers, or calcium channel blockers for hypertension
You will not qualify if you...
- Unable to understand the risks, benefits, and alternatives of participation and unable to give informed consent
- Contraindications to MRI such as implanted metallic devices (e.g., pacemakers, cerebral clips) or metallic projectiles
- Significant valvular heart abnormalities
- Pregnant women or women of childbearing potential without negative pregnancy testing
- History of clinical coronary artery disease or significant epicardial coronary artery stenosis greater than 50% unless successfully revascularized within the past 3 years without residual lesions over 50%
- History of infiltrative cardiomyopathy or constrictive pericarditis
- Presence of cor pulmonale
- Significant lung disease
- Estimated glomerular filtration rate below 20 ml/min
- Conditions other than heart failure that limit ability to perform a 6-minute walk or cardiopulmonary exercise test, such as critical peripheral vascular disease or major orthopedic or neurological conditions
- Diseases likely to significantly affect quality of life or perception of health status within 6 months
- Significant peripheral vascular disease
