Researchers are evaluating an exercise program compared to standard care in adults with end stage kidney disease who are receiving chronic dialysis. The study aims to find out how feasible it is to recruit patients, how well participants stick to the exercise program, and how the intervention impacts important patient outcomes. This research is conducted over three years to understand the effects of adding exercise to usual dialysis care. The exercise program lasts for 12 months and includes using Nordic Walking poles, accessing online exercise resources at home, regularly tracking steps with a pedometer, and receiving monthly verbal encouragement from dialysis unit staff. Participants are randomly assigned to either receive this exercise prescription plus standard care or standard care alone, where they also get monthly exercise encouragement. The exercise prescription gradually increases walking steps over the first six months followed by a six-month maintenance phase. During the study, participants will be monitored for how well they follow the exercise plan and their hand grip strength, quality of life, sleep quality, hospitalization rates, length of hospital stays, living status changes, and safety related to the exercise program. These assessments occur throughout the 12 months of intervention, with recruitment feasibility tracked over 30 months. The study provides regular support and tracks progress using pedometers and monthly contacts to encourage exercise adherence.
