What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating whether exercising before hemodialysis treatment can protect the heart muscle from reduced pumping ability, a problem known as heart stunning. This study is the first randomized crossover-controlled trial to examine the effects of exercise preconditioning in people receiving hemodialysis, aiming to see if such exercise can reduce heart injury and related symptoms during dialysis. The overall goal is to find a way to lower heart failure rates in this patient group. Participants will engage in intradialytic cycling, a form of exercise performed around the time of dialysis. This intervention is expected to improve cardiovascular health and physical fitness, potentially leading to better outcomes for those on hemodialysis. The study compares periods with and without this exercise to observe the impact on heart muscle function and symptoms. Throughout the study, participants will be monitored with echocardiograms to measure changes in heart muscle strain from week 1 to week 4. Researchers will assess heart function, symptom severity, and the number of affected heart segments. Safety and exercise ability will be evaluated by nephrologists, and the study includes ongoing assessments to track the effects of the exercise intervention during the dialysis treatment period.
