This research aims to explore the ethical and clinical practices of providing artificial hydration to terminal cancer patients in Taiwan. The study focuses on understanding when and how palliative care physicians decide to administer artificial hydration, addressing a common but ethically complex issue in end-of-life care. The goal is to develop a culturally relevant, evidence-based consensus guideline to aid physicians in making informed decisions for these patients. The study has two main parts. First, a nationwide survey will be conducted among members of the Taiwan Academy of Hospice Palliative Medicine and the Taiwan Society of Cancer Palliative Medicine to gather information on their indications and practices regarding artificial hydration. The second part involves a modified Delphi process with multiple rounds of interviews, surveys, and discussions among experts, patients, and families to establish a national consensus guideline on artificial hydration administration. Participants will complete questionnaires designed from literature and clinical ethics principles, with responses collected via email. Data analysis will include statistical tests and logistic regression to identify factors influencing hydration decisions. The outcome measures focus on ethical principles and clinical practices related to artificial hydration, assessed within six months. This process aims to produce a guideline that considers ethical, medical, cultural, and emotional factors to support quality end-of-life care for terminal cancer patients.
