What this Trial Is About
Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgeries worldwide, with increasing focus on achieving precise refractive outcomes and reducing dependence on glasses after surgery. Accurate measurements of the cornea's curvature, known as keratometry, are crucial for selecting the right intraocular lens (IOL) power. However, errors in keratometry can lead to differences between predicted and actual vision after surgery. Dry eye disease, indicated by tear film osmolarity, can affect the accuracy of these measurements. This study investigates whether closing the eyelids for a few minutes can improve keratometry measurement quality in patients flagged for keratometry quality warnings. Participants will undergo a single study visit where four keratometry measurements will be taken on one eye using an ocular biometer called IOLMaster 700. Two measurements will be taken with eyes open and normal blinking, followed by periods of eyelid closure for three minutes before the third and fourth measurements. This simple behavioral intervention is being examined to see if it improves the quality index of keratometric measurements compared to measurements done with eyes open. During the visit, the study eye will be measured twice with eyes open, then the participant will close their eyelids for three minutes before a third measurement, followed by another three-minute eyelid closure before a fourth measurement. Researchers will compare the difference in keratometry quality warnings between the initial and third measurements taken approximately six minutes apart. This approach aims to determine if eyelid closure can reduce measurement variability and improve preoperative biometry accuracy in patients with dry eye or ocular surface disease. Participation involves only a single study day with repeated measurements and no long-term follow-up.
