What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating whether a short-duration, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) program is more effective than standard moderate-intensity physical activity guidelines for people with type 2 diabetes. This pilot study aims to test the feasibility of prescribing HIIT through virtual care and will help guide a larger trial by measuring changes in blood sugar control (HbA1C) and weight. Participants are adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes who are able and safe to exercise as determined by their doctor. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups: a control group receiving standard population-based physical activity advice or an intervention group receiving detailed HIIT exercise guidelines. Both groups receive self-directed exercise handouts and are asked to record their physical activity in logbooks. They have access to a lifestyle coach by phone for support. The exercises can be done at home, in a gym, outside, or elsewhere according to participant preference. The study uses virtual care appointments for recruitment and follow-up. Data are collected at the start, and then again at 3 and 6 months. Measurements include weight, height, blood sugar levels (HbA1C), medication use, and self-reported physical activity. Baseline HbA1C may use a recent test if no major lifestyle or medication changes occurred. The study tracks changes in HbA1C to assess the impact of the exercise programs. Participation involves regular virtual diabetes visits and self-monitoring of physical activity over six months.
