What this Trial Is About
Researchers are studying first-degree relatives of people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, because these relatives have a higher chance of developing IBD themselves. The study aims to understand whether behaviors, diet, and biological markers can help predict who will develop IBD and explore ways to prevent it in these high-risk individuals. This research is designed as a long-term registry lasting about 10 years or more. Participants will be asked to complete questionnaires once a year and provide samples of blood, stool, and urine. Some parts of the study, like questionnaires and stool and urine collection, can be done at home. However, blood samples must be collected at Massachusetts General Hospital. There are no drugs or treatments being tested; instead, the study observes participants over time. Throughout the study, participants will have annual assessments including questionnaires and biological sample collection to monitor for the development of IBD. Researchers will track how many participants develop IBD over the course of the study, which is anticipated to last around 10 years. This long follow-up helps scientists learn more about the factors linked to IBD onset and support early detection and prevention strategies.
