What this Trial Is About
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common complication during pregnancy that affects glucose metabolism and increases insulin resistance. It is linked to negative pregnancy outcomes and a higher long-term risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases for both the mother and child. Researchers are establishing a detailed, long-term study of pregnant women diagnosed with GDM to better understand these effects and the underlying biological mechanisms. This observational study will follow about 100 pregnant women diagnosed with GDM each year, starting from their diagnosis between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy until 8-12 weeks after birth. Participants will have four study visits including two during pregnancy, sample collection at delivery, and a postpartum visit. During these visits, clinical data, physical and metabolic measurements, questionnaires, and biological samples such as blood, urine, saliva, vaginal swabs, breast milk, placental tissue, and cord blood will be collected to create a comprehensive profile of GDM pregnancies. Study involvement includes measurements of body composition, blood pressure, cardiovascular and metabolic health, and fetal growth monitoring by ultrasound. Researchers will also collect information on lifestyle, nutrition, and physical activity. The main outcomes measured are the mother's metabolic and cardiometabolic health from diagnosis through postpartum, and infant outcomes at birth and postpartum. Data and samples will be stored for future research and compared with data from healthy pregnancies to better understand GDM-related changes.

1 visit (in-person) to confirm gestational diabetes diagnosis
Duration - From approximately gestational weeks 26-30 through 8-12 weeks postpartum
Participants with gestational diabetes are observed and clinical data and biological samples are collected across pregnancy, delivery, and early postpartum to understand health outcomes for mother and baby.
4 visits: 1 after GDM diagnosis (weeks 26-30), 1 late pregnancy visit (weeks 34-37), delivery visit, and 1 postpartum follow-up visit (8-12 weeks after birth)
