Using Goal Attainment Scaling to Help Children and Teens with Cancer or Blood Diseases Stay Active During Stem Cell Transplant Hospitalization

This research aims to evaluate the use of Goal Attainment Scaling GAS to help maintain the functional abilities of children and adolescents undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation HSCT for oncological or hematological diseases. The study also explores how parents and adolescents perceive changes in functional abilities from hospital admission through follow-ups, the achievement of personalized functional goals in the experimental group, and the feasibility of the exercise program and rehabilitation counseling in both groups. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups. The control group follows an exercise program EP and daily rehabilitation counseling indications RCI. The experimental group receives the same EP and RCI but also sets personalized functional goals weekly using GAS with the help of a therapist. The exercise program is performed five days per week with 30-minute sessions including muscle strengthening, aerobic exercise, and stretching. Rehabilitation counseling provides practical advice to encourage an active lifestyle during recovery. Throughout hospitalization and up to 60 days after HSCT, participants undergo several assessments including the Functional Abilities Assessment in Paediatric Oncology scale, physical tests like the Sit and Reach and Hand Grip tests, and quality of life and fatigue questionnaires. Achievement of functional goals, adherence to interventions, and immunological changes are also monitored. This comprehensive follow-up helps measure the impact of GAS and exercise on maintaining function and quality of life in this pediatric population.
