Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Signed informed consent and assent as appropriate
- Willingness to follow all study procedures and be available throughout the study
- Age between 8 and 25 years at enrollment
- Symptoms of gastroparesis for at least 12 weeks including nausea, vomiting, early satiety, postprandial fullness, or upper abdominal pain
- Completed a gastric emptying scintigraphic study within the past 12 months showing delayed emptying or normal emptying with symptoms
- Diagnosis of diabetic or idiopathic gastroparesis or gastroparesis-like syndrome
You will not qualify if you...
- Unable to complete gastric emptying test (including egg allergy)
- Pregnancy
- Autism spectrum disorder, significant developmental delay, or psychosis
- Use of narcotic pain medications more than three days per week
- Conditions causing gastrointestinal mucosal disease (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease, eosinophilic gastroenteritis or esophagitis, gastric or peptic ulcers, celiac disease)
- Other conditions causing delayed gastric emptying
- Gastrointestinal obstruction confirmed by imaging
- Neurological conditions causing nausea and vomiting (e.g., increased intracranial pressure, brain lesions)
- Acute or chronic kidney failure or on dialysis
- Acute liver failure or advanced liver disease with portal hypertension
- Significant congenital heart disease
- History of esophageal, gastric, or bowel surgery
- Metabolic diseases including mitochondrial or inborn errors of metabolism
- Chronic lung diseases including cystic fibrosis
- Serious chronic medical conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease
- Use of medications affecting motility during gastric emptying study
- Any other condition that could explain symptoms or interfere with study participation
