Periodontitis is a widespread chronic disease affecting millions globally, with high prevalence in Hong Kong. This research explores the potential benefits of a healthful plant-based diet combined with non-surgical periodontal treatment in patients with Stage II and Stage III periodontitis. The study aims to provide clinical, immunological, and microbiological evidence on whether this dietary pattern can improve treatment outcomes for periodontitis. Participants will be randomly assigned to either a test group receiving dietary guidance on a healthy plant-based diet from a registered dietitian or a control group continuing their usual diet. Both groups will receive standard non-surgical periodontal treatment including oral hygiene instructions, risk factor control, and scaling and root surface debridement. The dietary intervention includes a 3-month active phase, a 3-month reinforcement phase, and a 6-month maintenance phase. Participants will undergo baseline assessments including periodontal examination, dietary evaluation, physical activity assessment, and collection of biological samples such as blood, saliva, feces, and plaque. Follow-up visits will occur at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months post-treatment to monitor changes, with the primary outcome being changes in probing pocket depth at 6 months. The study will also track immunological and microbiological markers to assess treatment effects and safety.
