Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Age between 55 and 80 years
  • No tobacco or nicotine use in the past 6 months
  • Systolic blood pressure less than 140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure less than 90 mmHg
  • Normal 12-lead ECG reviewed by a physician
  • Normal results from a medical exam reviewed by a board-certified physician
  • Body mass index (BMI) less than 40 unless athletic or muscular build
  • Post-menopausal females only
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Not between 55 and 80 years of age
  • Body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 unless athletic or muscular build
  • Use of tobacco or nicotine products within the last 6 months
  • Not abstaining from exercise, alcohol, certain medications, supplements, or caffeinated substances for 24 hours before experimental sessions
  • Weighing less than 80 lbs
  • Use of drugs known to affect vascular function unless approved
  • Use of anti-hypertensive medications or beta blockers
  • Daily use of bronchodilators
  • Current use of anti-coagulant therapy
  • Current hormone replacement therapy
  • Current diagnosis of cancer
  • Signs of uncontrolled cardio-metabolic abnormalities
  • History of cerebrovascular problems such as stroke or epilepsy
  • Known atherosclerosis
  • Autonomic dysfunction
  • Respiratory illnesses except exercise-induced asthma or recovered COVID-19
  • History of anaphylaxis or severe needle phobia
  • History of alcohol or drug abuse impacting study participation
  • Latex allergy
  • Allergies to study drugs
  • Implanted electronic medical devices
  • Tissue or skin abnormalities on legs or arms
  • Current fever above 99.5�B0F (37.5�B0C)
  • Use of certain medications (e.g., PDE3 inhibitors) without withholding before testing
  • Diagnosis of neurological disease or cognitive dysfunction
  • Recent cardiac surgery or events
  • Abnormal clotting or blood clots
  • History of mastectomies
  • History of methemoglobinemia
