What this Trial Is About
The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in catastrophic infections and fatalities across the nation. Many older Veterans with comorbidities are especially vulnerable to complications and poor recovery. This award will investigate the effect of a novel, home-based, supervised, group exercise tele-rehabilitation in Veterans recovered from COVID-19 on cardiopulmonary and physical function.

Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Veteran
- Documented COVID-19 infection more than 90 days ago
- Diagnosis of at least two of the following: hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Or one of the above conditions plus a body mass index over 30 kg/m2
You will not qualify if you...
- Myocardial infarction within the past 3 months
- Exertional or unstable angina causing activity limitations
- Severe congestive heart failure (ejection fraction below 20% in last year or NYHA Class III or IV)
- Uncontrolled hypertension with systolic blood pressure over 180 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure over 110 mm Hg at screening
- Screening EKG showing ischemia, complex arrhythmia, or high-grade block
- Poorly controlled diabetes mellitus (fasting blood sugar over 200 mg/dl, random blood sugar over 299 mg/dl, or HbA1C over 10)
- Cancer treatment within past 3 months except for skin cancer
- Peripheral vascular disease with claudication
- Severe arthritis limiting walking ability
- Neurologic disease limiting walking ability (requiring assistive device or severe neuropathy)
- End stage liver disease (decompensated)
- End stage renal failure requiring dialysis
- Severe pulmonary disease (home oxygen use or recent hospital admission for breathing issues within 1 month)
- High risk of falls due to history of falls or bone fractures
- Dementia preventing consent
- Any other medical condition that would prevent exercise testing or training
- Regularly performing structured aerobic exercise more than 3 times per week
