What this Trial Is About
This research aims to determine if an interactive mobile health (mHealth) intervention called Motivation Matters! (MM!) can help HIV-positive women who are starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) take their medication regularly and reduce their viral load. The study focuses on women in high-burden settings, comparing the effectiveness of MM! plus standard care versus standard care alone in achieving undetectable HIV viral load by six months. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups. The MM! group receives standard care plus personalized, interactive text messages—three messages weekly during the first month, then two messages weekly for the following five months. These messages are tailored based on individual preferences such as name, language, religion, and parental status, and participants reply briefly to each message. The control group receives standard care following Kenyan guidelines, including clinic-based ART adherence education and counseling. During the six-month study period, participants will receive ART and counseling, with regular monitoring of their viral load to assess treatment effectiveness. Researchers will measure the number of women who achieve an undetectable viral load at six months. Adherence is supported and tracked through the interactive messaging in the intervention group, while all participants receive standard counseling and care. The total participation duration is six months from enrollment.
