What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating how severe burn injuries affect core body temperature during cycles of work and rest in a heated environment. The study compares non-burned volunteers with those who have sustained serious burns covering 20% or more of their body surface. The goal is to understand temperature responses in these groups during heat exposure, which may help improve safety and care for burn survivors. Participants will complete up to three work:rest cycles in an environmental chamber set to no higher than 40 6C. Each cycle includes 30 minutes of exercise followed by up to 20 minutes of rest while remaining in the heated space. These cycles will be performed twice in separate visits: once in low humidity and once in high humidity conditions, with the order randomized. The study groups include non-burned individuals, those with moderate burns (20-40% of body surface area), and those with large burns (over 40%). During the visits, researchers will monitor core temperature and heart rate from the start of exercise to the end of the last rest period, about 170 minutes in total. Participants will undergo medical history reviews, physical exams, and resting ECGs to confirm health status. The study lasts until 2031, and participants will be assessed for changes in temperature and heart rate related to heat exposure and burn severity.
