Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Age between 18-35 and 60-85 years
- Ability to sign informed consent
- Living independently prior to admission
You will not qualify if you...
- History of cardiovascular disease such as congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, or right-to-left shunt
- History of endocrine or metabolic diseases including hypo/hyperthyroidism and diabetes
- History of kidney disease or failure
- Vascular disease or risk of deep vein thrombosis including family history of thrombophilia or related conditions
- Use of anticoagulant therapy like Coumadin or heparin
- Elevated blood pressure with systolic over 150 or diastolic over 100
- Presence of implanted electronic devices such as pacemakers or stimulators
- Cancer or cancer treatment within the past year except basal cell carcinoma
- Current weight-loss diet
- Chronic systemic corticosteroid use for two or more weeks within four weeks before enrollment and during study
- Use of androgens or growth hormone within six months before enrollment and during study
- History of stroke with motor disability
- Recent gastrointestinal bleeding within the past 12 months
- History of liver disease
- History of respiratory disease including acute upper respiratory infection or chronic lung disease
- Pregnancy confirmed by a test
- Employment as staff reporting directly or indirectly to an investigator
- Any other condition deemed exclusionary by the principal investigator or faculty physician
