What this Trial Is About
This research investigates how alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) after extraction of upper back teeth affects the need for sinus floor augmentation procedures before dental implant placement. It focuses on patients who had maxillary posterior teeth extracted, dividing them based on their tooth roots' relationship to the sinus, and compares those who had ARP with those who healed naturally. The study uses retrospective radiographic data collected over 10 years to analyze changes in bone height and the potential need for sinus lift procedures. Patients are grouped by the relationship of their tooth roots to the maxillary sinus into four types, and then into subgroups based on whether they received ARP or unassisted socket healing after extraction. Cone beam CT (CBCT) scans taken at least 4 months after extraction and ARP are used to measure residual bone height. Based on these measurements, patients are classified into categories indicating the need for lateral sinus augmentation, crestal sinus augmentation, or no sinus elevation before implant placement. Participants' clinical radiographs and CBCT scans are analyzed for mid-ridge height and sinus floor relationship. The primary measure is the mid-ridge height in millimeters, and secondary outcomes include the need for sinus floor elevation procedures. Data collection involves standardized measurements by a single operator, with statistical analysis to evaluate the impact of ARP. The study duration spans 4 to 12 months post-extraction for each participant's imaging data collection and analysis.

Your Study Journey
Duration - 2 to 4 weeks
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial.
1 visit (in-person)
Duration - 4 to 12 months post-extraction
Participants who underwent extraction of maxillary posterior teeth with or without alveolar ridge preservation are observed retrospectively through radiographical and CBCT imaging to assess the mid-ridge height and need for sinus floor elevation.
1 visit for CBCT imaging between 4 and 12 months post-extraction
