What this Trial Is About
Mobility disability is a common and often untreated issue among older adults, affecting nearly 18% of this population. It is usually the first disability to occur and raises the risk of further disabilities and death. Researchers are studying a shorter form of resistance training called Functional Activity Strength Training (FAST) to see if it can improve lower body strength and walking ability in older adults with mobility limitations. This study is a randomized trial involving 360 older adults, aiming to test the effects of FAST on physical performance and daily function. The study compares two groups: one group will perform 5 minutes of FAST exercises daily for 12 months, supported by 24 video coaching sessions. FAST includes five exercises—stepping on a step, chair stands, push-ups, rows, and walking—each done for 30 seconds with rests in between. The other group will be a delayed treatment control, receiving the intervention after 12 months. The study uses a double-blind, randomized design to fairly assess the impact of this brief training program. Participants will be assessed at the start, 6 months, and 12 months using the Short Physical Performance Battery to measure lower body function. Researchers will monitor adherence to the training, physical performance, walking ability, falls, and functional limitations. The study aims to see if brief, daily resistance training can be a practical way to improve mobility for older adults. Total participation lasts for one year, with regular evaluations throughout the study period.
