Researchers are evaluating how GLP-1 and GIP agonists affect the quality of bowel preparation in adult patients scheduled for colonoscopies. This phase 4 randomized controlled trial aims to determine if these medications increase the rate of inadequate bowel preparation, compare bowel preparation quality between patients who hold versus continue their medication dose, and assess differences in complication rates such as gastric aspiration. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups those who continue their GLP-1 or GIP medication as prescribed before the colonoscopy, and those who withhold their medication dose following ASA guidance recommendations. The study uses a double-blind design to compare these approaches during the colonoscopy procedure. Throughout the study, researchers monitor various outcomes including the rate of inadequate bowel preparation, bowel preparation scores Boston and Ottawa, adenoma detection rate, colonoscope insertion and withdrawal times, total procedure time, and rates of complications such as unplanned endotracheal intubation and hospital visits due to hypoxia or pneumonia within 96 hours after the procedure.
