Study of Semaglutide Effects on Muscle and Heart Health in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes or Obesity

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying how semaglutide affects muscle and fat changes in the body and heart over a 12-month period. The study focuses on people with type 2 diabetes or obesity who are starting semaglutide treatment. The goal is to better understand how this medication might influence muscle health and function, especially for those at risk of muscle loss. Participants will attend three in-person visits during which they will undergo advanced MRI scans of the heart, abdomen, and legs both at rest and during exercise. They will also complete physical tests such as balance, sit-to-stand, walking speed, and handgrip strength, along with questionnaires about their health, physical activity, and nutrition. Blood samples will be collected through both vein draws and finger pricks, and participants will keep food records for three days. Throughout the study, researchers will monitor changes in skeletal and cardiac muscle mass as the primary outcome over 12 months. Participants will be assessed using various physical tests and imaging techniques to track muscle and fat changes. The study will last for one year, with comprehensive evaluations to understand the long-term effects of semaglutide on muscle and heart health.
