What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating the impact of Stress First Aid (SFA) adapted specifically for the substance use outreach workforce. This trial aims to compare the effects of this intervention on social support and burnout among substance use outreach workers, who face high levels of occupational stress and trauma. The study addresses a critical gap in research by focusing on the well-being of these workers, whose health is linked to patient care quality and workforce stability. Participants are randomly assigned to either a treatment group or a no treatment control group. The treatment group receives a 2-hour virtual SFA training followed by six monthly 30-minute virtual learning collaborative meetings. These sessions are designed to help workers manage stress and improve workplace support. The control group does not receive any intervention. This cluster-randomized hybrid type I trial involves 500 participants and includes an initial planning phase with focus groups and a field test that informed the adapted intervention. During the trial, researchers will assess participants at baseline and two months after the intervention training. They will measure changes in burnout using the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory and social support using the Job Content Questionnaire Social Support Sub-Scale. Secondary outcomes include the use of SFA concepts, job-related well-being, secondary traumatic stress, coping strategies, self-efficacy, work engagement, turnover intention, and moral injury symptoms. The study aims to develop a sustainable intervention to support the substance use outreach workforce nationally. Participation lasts from enrollment through two months post-training, with ongoing monitoring of outcomes.
