What this Trial Is About
Researchers are studying the role of non-essential amino acids (NEAA) in maintaining skeletal muscle protein synthesis in healthy young men. The study focuses on how a diet lacking NEAA, with or without additional essential amino acids (EAA), affects muscle building and whole-body energy metabolism. This randomized, double-blind, parallel design study involves healthy males aged 18 to 35 years with a body mass index between 22 and 30 kg/m2. It aims to understand whether insufficient NEAA intake reduces muscle protein synthesis. Participants receive one of three dietary supplements dissolved in water and taken four times daily: an EAA supplement, a NEAA supplement, or a maltodextrin supplement. This intervention lasts for 10 days, during which the effects of these diets on muscle protein synthesis rates are assessed. The study compares the impact of diets with or without NEAA and evaluates whether additional EAA can compensate for the absence of NEAA. During the study, researchers measure integrated skeletal muscle protein fractional synthesis rates over 10 days. Participants undergo dietary monitoring and evaluations to track muscle protein building and metabolism. The study includes health assessments to ensure safety, and participants are monitored closely throughout the intervention period to collect data on muscle protein synthesis and overall metabolic responses.
