Improving Outpatient Endometrial Biopsy Success A Quality Improvement Project at Adan Hospital

What this Trial Is About

Endometrial biopsy using the Pipelle device is a common outpatient procedure to diagnose endometrial cancer, especially in women with abnormal vaginal bleeding around menopause. While this method can diagnose 90% of cases, a significant number of samples are insufficient for diagnosis, as seen in a hospital where 32% of samples were inadequate. This project aims to identify and improve factors affecting biopsy success in that setting. The study involves improving biopsy techniques by using a checklist with key steps and tips displayed in the procedure room, discussing challenges in scientific meetings, and sharing information within the medical team. Patients with certain ultrasound findings or difficult anatomy may receive hysteroscopy-guided biopsies instead of blind sampling. Pain relief with paracetamol or NSAIDs may be given before the procedure to help patients tolerate it better and reduce incomplete samples. Participants undergoing outpatient endometrial biopsy will be observed from November 2024 to April 2025. Researchers will monitor the adequacy of biopsy samples for diagnosis over six months, comparing results before and after implementing these improvements. The study tracks how well the samples support histopathology diagnosis and aims to enhance biopsy success rates through these quality improvements.
