Online Family-based Community LITE Program to Reduce Childhood Obesity in Children Aged 6 to 12 Years

What this Trial Is About

Childhood obesity is increasing in Singapore, affecting about 13% of children as of 2017. Since many overweight children remain overweight into adulthood, this trend raises concerns for future diabetes rates. Early interventions are important to help improve childrens weight and encourage lifelong healthy habits. This trial tests a community-based family intervention program called Community LITE, designed to combine school, clinic, and community resources to provide a more effective and sustainable approach to managing childhood obesity in children aged 6 to 12 years. The study compares two groups one receiving standard care, which includes clinic consultations and educational pamphlets, and another receiving standard care plus the Community LITE program. The Community LITE program offers online family sessions twice a week for 4 to 5 months, each lasting one hour. These sessions focus on physical activity, nutrition, and behavior through activities like cooking classes, games, sports, and peer support. Participants also receive basic sports equipment to support the program. Participants will be assessed at the start, 6 months, and 12 months for changes in Body Mass Index BMI z-score, waist circumference, blood pressure, fruit and vegetable intake, physical activity levels, and quality of life. The study will monitor how well the program is accepted and implemented and evaluate its cost and effectiveness. The total study participation may last up to a year, with ongoing assessments to understand the programs impact on childrens health and lifestyle.
