What this Trial Is About

This research aims to assess a culturally tailored, interactive computer-based education program designed for hospitalized African-American adults with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). The study evaluates whether this computerized adaptive education (CAE) can improve patients' knowledge about CKD self-care and renal replacement therapy (RRT) options, compared to usual hospital care. It also examines if CAE increases patients' willingness to engage in CKD self-care and preparation for RRT. Participants will receive either the computer-adaptive CKD education program, which is tailored to their cultural background and educates them about kidney disease and treatment choices, or usual hospital care consisting of computer-based general health education covering diet, physical activity, and medication adherence. The study compares the effects of these two approaches on patients during their hospital stay. Throughout the study, researchers will measure changes in patients' knowledge about CKD and RRT before and one day after the education intervention, using the Kidney Disease Knowledge Survey. They will also assess patients' intent to participate in self-care and treatment preparation, as well as their health activation levels. Follow-up at 30 days post-discharge will check if patients have taken action toward CKD self-care and health-seeking behaviors. The study includes adults aged 18 to 70 who identify as African American and have reduced kidney function.
