What this Trial Is About
VATS/RATS is widely used for diagnosis and treatment of intrathoracic conditions. Despite many benefits, postoperative pain continues to be intense after VATS/RATS. The optimal strategy for pain management has not been defined. In this randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded clinical investigation, investigators hypothesize that 5 mcg/kg intrathecal morphine will decrease postoperative analgesic consumption and reduce pain.

Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Age 18-80 years old
- Scheduled for elective video-assisted thoracoscopic or robotic-assisted anatomical lung resection
- General anesthesia planned with removal of breathing tube during surgery
You will not qualify if you...
- American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification of 4 or 5
- Planned postoperative intubation
- Significant liver disease
- Use of intravenous inotropes or vasopressor support before surgery
- Mechanical ventilation before surgery
- Use of mechanical circulatory support devices before surgery
- Severe pulmonary disease requiring home oxygen or oral steroids
- Allergy to morphine
- Opioid or alcohol abuse
- Chronic pain
- Renal failure
- Unable to understand English
- Bleeding disorders
- Abnormal blood clotting before surgery
- Infection
- Refusal to participate
- Failed spinal anesthesia
