What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying epilepsy in both adults and children aged 8 years and older who have a diagnosed or suspected form of the condition. The goal is to learn more about seizures and how best to treat people with epilepsy that does not respond well to medication. This observational study aims to maintain a group of patients with epilepsy to support ongoing NIH epilepsy research and to observe the natural course of epilepsy and related disorders. Participants receive standard evaluations and care, including physical exams, medical history reviews, and questionnaires. They may be admitted to the hospital for several weeks during which their medications might be adjusted or stopped. Various tests are conducted, such as blood and urine tests, EEGs (brain wave recordings with attached wires), memory and thinking assessments, MRI scans, MEG brain recordings using a helmet, and PET scans involving a small radioactive dye injection. During the study, participants will have many visits and assessments to monitor their condition and treatment. Follow-up may continue at intervals, and participation ends if they have not been seen clinically for their epilepsy for three years. The research team measures outcomes like screening and characterizing drug-resistant epilepsy cases over a five-year period, and clinical care data is used for descriptive and correlational research. The total participation time varies by individual needs.
