Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 45 kg/m2
- Men and women
- Age between 18 and 65 years
- Sedentary to moderately active (less than 2 hours per week of moderate, structured exercise)
You will not qualify if you...
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Smoking more than one pack of tobacco per week
- Weight change greater than 5 pounds in the previous 3 months
- Cognitive impairment
- Previous bariatric surgery
- History of eating disorder
- Conditions such as type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, inflammatory disease, untreated thyroid disease, fluid overload states (including chronic kidney disease, congestive heart failure, or cirrhosis)
- Use of medications that may interfere with study outcomes (e.g., glucocorticoids, GLP-1 analogues, hormone replacement therapy)
- Pre-menopausal women must have regular menstrual cycles (28 +/- 2 days) or be using hormonal contraceptives
- Fasting glucose above 125 mg/dl or HbA1c above 6.4%
