Study of Kidney and Blood Pressure Outcomes in Childhood Cancer Survivors After High-Risk Cancer Therapy Observing Effects at 3 and 5 Years Post-Treatment

This research aims to better understand kidney and blood pressure problems in childhood cancer survivors CCS, who face higher risks of chronic kidney disease CKD, hypertension HTN, and reduced quality of life due to prior cancer treatments. The study focuses on when and how CKD and HTN begin after cancer therapy and seeks to fill gaps in current guidelines that lack clear recommendations for kidney and blood pressure monitoring in CCS. Researchers will observe 500 CCS who received therapies known to affect kidney and blood pressure health. They will assess kidney function and blood pressure at 3 and 5 years after completing cancer treatment. The study will measure kidney filtration rates, protein levels in urine, and blood pressure using both office and ambulatory monitoring. The study also examines the impact of acute kidney injury during treatment and cardiometabolic risk factors on later kidney health. Participants will undergo evaluations at 3 and 5 years post-therapy, including blood and urine tests and blood pressure measurements. Changes in these health markers between these time points will be tracked. The main measures include the prevalence of CKD and HTN at each time point and changes over time. The study aims to provide data to improve international guidelines for kidney and blood pressure monitoring and treatment in CCS, potentially enhancing their long-term health and quality of life.
