Researchers are evaluating how eating more traditional country foods affects mental health among Inuit adults aged 18 to 65 in Arviat, Nunavut. The study focuses on whether increased consumption of these foods can reduce depression and anxiety, and how participation in food-gathering and cultural activities influences emotional well-being and cultural identity. This early phase 1 trial also examines the feasibility and cultural acceptability of a multi-level intervention that combines country foods, community wellness practices, and clinical care. Participants will receive weekly distributions of traditional foods such as caribou and fish, accompanied by guided conversations about dietary changes and emotional health. They will also join weekly cultural workshops led by Elders, focusing on traditional food preparation and sharing practices, as well as cultural camps with land-based teachings. These activities aim to strengthen social bonds, cultural identity, and community cohesion while supporting food sovereignty. Throughout the 12-week treatment period, researchers will collect data through interviews, participant diaries, and mental health assessments at baseline, 4, 8, and 12 weeks. They will measure participant satisfaction, cultural acceptability of the intervention, and changes in depression and anxiety symptoms. The study also explores the role of Elders in transferring cultural knowledge and addresses systemic barriers to accessing country foods to inform culturally relevant healthcare and policy recommendations.
