This research aims to evaluate the effects of Dialectical Behavior Therapy DBT on individuals who have experienced an acquired brain injury ABI more than 18 months ago. The study focuses on how DBT may help improve emotional and behavioral regulation, quality of life, self-esteem, family functioning, and reduce caregiver burden. It also investigates the impact on life goals, post-traumatic growth, spirituality, and experience of free will after ABI using a combination of group and individual therapy sessions. Participants will undergo three phases over 15 months first, 5 months of usual care in a medico-social setting second, 5 months of DBT including 19 weeks of group skills training and individual sessions and third, 5 months of follow-up care combining usual care with monthly DBT reminders. Control groups include people without brain injury and family members of ABI patients, who participate in specific assessments but do not receive DBT. During the study, participants will complete self- and family-reported questionnaires assessing quality of life, emotional regulation, self-esteem, stress, anxiety, cognitive challenges, family dynamics, coping strategies, caregiver burden, and goal attainment. Researchers will also analyze participants memories and narratives at three different times to study emotional expression and free will. The study includes both group-level and individual analyses to understand the effects of DBT in this population.
