Actively Recruiting

Researchers are studying tracheal stenosis that develops after a percutaneous tracheotomy. The goal is to find ways to remove the tracheal cannula permanently, so patients can breathe naturally again without the tube. Since there is no widely accepted standard treatment, this study is evaluating cryotherapy as a gentle option to treat tracheal narrowing and improve breathing. The treatment begins by unblocking the tracheal cannula so patients breathe at least partially through the natural airway. If signs like increased breathing effort, restlessness, or noisy breathing suggest tracheal stenosis, a tracheoscopy is performed to confirm the diagnosis and assess severity. If the narrowing is at least 30-50% and causing symptoms, cryotherapy is planned as the main therapy, with other methods used only rarely. The procedure is done under analgesia similar to bronchoscopy standards. Participants will be monitored about 10 days after treatment to assess progress. The main outcome is whether the tracheal cannula can be successfully removed within 12 months. Throughout the study, patients will have clinical evaluations to track breathing and airway status. This approach aims to enable long-term removal of the tracheal tube and improve quality of life.
