Preoperative anxiety is a common problem among children facing surgery, often causing significant distress due to uncertainty and lack of control. This trial evaluates two doses of oral melatonin as premedication to reduce anxiety in children between 4 and 10 years old undergoing elective surgery. Melatonin is studied for its potential calming effects and interaction with brain receptors involved in pain and anxiety. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either 0.2 mg/kg or 0.4 mg/kg of oral melatonin, or a placebo, given 90 minutes before anesthesia induction on the morning of surgery. The maximum melatonin dose is capped at 10 mg. This double-blind trial compares these groups to assess the impact of melatonin dosing on anxiety reduction. Children's anxiety levels will be measured 24 hours before surgery to assess preoperative anxiety. The study involves monitoring participants’ response to premedication and collecting data on anxiety levels to determine treatment effects. The total participation includes the preoperative period and immediate follow-up after medication administration.
