Childhood overweight and obesity are significant concerns, especially in regions like Sonora, Mexico, where a high percentage of children and adolescents are affected. Excess body fat during childhood increases the risk of developing serious metabolic conditions in adulthood, such as hypertension and insulin resistance. This research aims to evaluate whether a family-based intervention using a mobile application and multidisciplinary approach grounded in parenting principles and social cognitive theory can improve eating behaviors and prevent obesity among schoolchildren aged 5 to 9 years. Participants are assigned to either receive nutritional therapy supported by a mobile app or conventional nutritional treatment. The intervention focuses on promoting healthy dietary patterns and parenting practices through a communication strategy that monitors needs, encourages engagement, and supports adherence. The study is conducted at "La Caridad" Educational Center in Nacozari de García, Sonora, and targets families of children within the specified age range who have access to smartphones with internet and cameras. Throughout the six-month study period, researchers will assess various factors including dietary behavior, body mass index, feeding practices, physical activity, and body composition measures like fat mass and fat-free mass. They will also monitor metabolic indicators such as glucose and cholesterol levels. Parenting practices and overall dietary patterns are evaluated as primary outcomes. The study carefully tracks participant progress and safety while aiming to understand the effectiveness of this mobile health approach in preventing childhood obesity.
