Researchers are investigating the role of gut microbiota in female patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), a serious mental disorder characterized by severely restricted food intake and low body weight. This condition leads to significant medical and psychiatric complications, including gastrointestinal problems and high relapse rates. The study aims to improve understanding of how gut microbes are affected during standard clinical treatment and to explore potential prebiotic treatments that could support better weight restoration and overall health in AN patients. The study involves female participants aged 16 to 50 years diagnosed with AN who are undergoing a standard care treatment program consisting of psychotherapy and nutritional rehabilitation to normalize food intake and promote weight gain. Researchers will collect and analyze fecal microbiota samples at baseline (about one week before admission) and then again at approximately 6 and 12 weeks into treatment. The trial also includes control participants with normal or slightly elevated BMI for comparative analysis. Participants will complete assessments of mental health and gastrointestinal symptoms at the same time points as the microbiota samples. The study monitors changes in fecal microbiota composition and clinical outcomes over time to better understand the biological impact of current treatments. This research seeks to pave the way for personalized prebiotic therapies that could improve treatment tolerability and effectiveness for individuals with anorexia nervosa.
