Researchers are evaluating Metacognitive Training Minus MCT Minus, an adapted psychological intervention designed to reduce negative symptoms in people with schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. Negative symptoms, such as social withdrawal and lack of motivation, are challenging to treat and greatly affect daily functioning. This study aims to scientifically assess whether MCT Minus can reduce negative symptoms, defeatist attitudes, internalized stigma, and depression, while improving self-reflection and overall functioning. The research also explores potential underlying mechanisms and brain network changes related to treatment effects. The study compares two groups one receiving MCT Minus, which consists of eight individual sessions focusing on psychoeducation and strategies targeting dysfunctional beliefs linked to negative symptoms, and a control group receiving supportive counseling in eight sessions. Participants in the control group may later receive the MCT Minus intervention if they wish. The intervention is delivered individually and is based on prior research showing promise for this approach. Participants will be involved in assessments including interviews and questionnaires measuring negative symptoms, motivation, depression, stigma, and functioning. These evaluations use tools such as the Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Symptoms and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. The study uses a randomized, double-blind design and includes follow-up to monitor changes and safety. The total duration and visit schedule vary as per the trial protocol, with all data collected to understand treatment impact and mechanisms.
