Researchers are evaluating the feasibility and acceptability of a one-time booster session for Problem Management Plus (PM+), a World Health Organization (WHO) behavioral intervention, in adults experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties such as depression and anxiety symptoms. This pilot randomized controlled trial is conducted at the Grand Bahama Resilience Center (GBRC) in the Bahamas. The study involves training local therapists to deliver the standard PM+ program, followed by developing a booster session collaboratively with community providers and academic researchers. The goal is to support psychological well-being through skills like diaphragmatic breathing, problem management, behavioral activation, and strengthening social support. Participants will first receive five one-on-one PM+ sessions delivered by trained GBRC counselors. After completing these sessions, participants will be randomly assigned to either receive a single booster session around three months later or a control group that will receive a reminder phone call about an upcoming assessment. The booster session lasts about 60 minutes and focuses on reviewing and practicing PM+ strategies and planning for future use. The study involves multiple phases including training providers, developing the booster curriculum, and conducting the pilot trial with randomization and follow-ups. Participants will complete self-report surveys measuring anxiety and depression at enrollment, week 5, week 18, and week 30. Additional qualitative interviews will be conducted with both participants and providers to gather feedback on the intervention and booster session. Providers will submit fidelity checklists for each session. The study will track outcomes and participant experiences through six months, with all follow-up assessments expected by April 2026. Data collection will begin after IRB approval, with training and booster development planned between August 2024 and early 2025.
