Stroke is becoming more common in low-income African countries, including Uganda, but there is limited knowledge about its risk factors, prevention, and rehabilitation. This research collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and the Africa Medical and Behavioral Sciences Organization aims to improve understanding of stroke prevalence, mortality, and recovery in Uganda. The study focuses on how stroke and related non-communicable diseases affect quality of life and seeks to inform better prevention and rehabilitation strategies aligned with global health goals. The study uses data collected from 17,000 households through health surveys that include questions about stroke prevention, impact, and rehabilitation needs. Validated tools like the Ugandan version of the Stroke Impact Scale are used to assess the consequences of stroke and recovery factors. The research will also map risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, HIV, malaria, physical inactivity, and obesity to better understand their roles in stroke occurrence and outcomes. Participants will be assessed for stroke impact and perceived recovery at one point during 2023-2024 using the Stroke Impact Scale-16. The study will monitor the quality of life and rehabilitation needs of those affected by stroke, aiming to provide valuable data for healthcare policies and guidelines. This involvement includes completing questionnaires and health surveys related to stroke and its risk factors, contributing to the long-term goal of reducing stroke prevalence and improving rehabilitation in Uganda.
