Actively Recruiting
Asthma is a long-term lung condition affecting many children and teenagers, with some experiencing ongoing symptoms and attacks despite medication. This research aims to see if focusing on improving teenagers' confidence in managing their asthma can enhance their quality of life. The study compares a new approach that tailors consultations based on a self-efficacy questionnaire with usual care for teenagers aged 12 to 18 years attending respiratory clinics. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. In the first, teenagers complete the Adolescent Asthma Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (AASEQ) before their clinic visit, and healthcare professionals use the results to focus support on areas where the teenager needs help managing asthma. The second group receives the usual consultation without this tailored approach. The study measures quality of life three months after the appointment. During the study, participants' quality of life will be assessed using a standardized questionnaire called the Paediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire three months after enrollment. Researchers will monitor how well teenagers manage their asthma and how confident they feel about their self-care. The total duration involves the initial clinic visit and a follow-up assessment at three months to evaluate the impact of the self-efficacy approach.
